Thoughts
- Not as thought provoking as some other short stories.
- You can tell that Tolstoy gained a great deal of respect and love for the Tatar people during his youth in the region.
- The horrors of war are shown in a less visceral way than usually done. For example, instead of focusing on the horrible death of a soldier he spends his time talking about the soldier’s family.
- To truly enjoy this story, I think it’s necessary to understand the Tatar deeply. It’s really an ode to them and cannot be understood without knowing how they live.
