I work in international commerce
which means I have to take a close look at the tariffs imposed on all countries around the world by the USA. These changes hit our bottom line directly, it’s very important that we find ways to mitigate the negative effects that these policies will have on our business.
The more I think about these changes, the more I think that this is going to put the USA in weaker position than it was previously.
I tweeted a summary of what I think is going to be the major effect of these changes:
The worst part of the tariff changes are not intrinsic but lack of stability & clarity
- Change in 60 days after negotiations?
- Delays added after unforeseen complications? eg. de minimis
- New specific carve-outs introduced. ==> leads to paralysis & lack of investment
I don’t see how any EU large enterprise will not at least give a second and third thought to European goods and service providers vs. USA providers now. It seems to me intrinsically risky to buy from the USA now - you no longer know the price of what you are buying!
